BEING OVERWHELMED

Life can often become overwhelming.  It may be due to a crazy schedule, out of control finances, health issues or relationship struggles.  Below is a list of some helpful hints.  Remember that facing overwhelming times is as much a mental battle as anything else.  If you really want victory in this area, beware that you don’t read the list and offer reasons or excuses why these don’t or won’t work for you.  Overcoming the excuses may be the beginning of overcoming your being overwhelmed.

  1. Focus on the important.  Sometimes the “urgent” gets more attention than the important.  Always remember that relationships are of higher priority than things or projects.

  2. Focus on the eternal.  Your life on earth is limited.  We all die.  Living life in light of eternity does two things.  First, it helps us prioritize what is important.  Secondly, it allows you to think how your actions and attitudes will not only affect the here and now but how they can be an investment in the future.  How will the decisions you make today cause a positive impact on the future?

  3. Remember that your value is not wrapped in your performance.  We often get overwhelmed because we don’t give ourselves permission to fail.  We think we should be able to handle it, whatever “it” is.  We think we are of less value if we can not accomplish what is set before us.  This may because of over expectations or the constant comparing ourselves with others, seeing ourselves falling short.  Stop comparing.  Stop basing your value on your performance.  Allow yourself some space.  Take your fears to the Lord.  It is fear that enters you into the feeling of being overwhelmed.  Trust God with your fear.  His perfect love can take your fear away.  Learn to trust.
